Bogus Police Officer Nabbed After Demanding US$80 Bribe From A Motorist

A bogus police officer has been arrested after he and other two accomplices who are currently on the run reportedly demanded US$80 bribe from a motorist accusing him of breaching Covid-19 regulations.

Leon Mukunga appeared before Harare magistrate Judith Taruvinga on Friday charged with impersonation and extortion.

The matter was rolled over to 23 August for bail application.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) took to their Twitter page and wrote:

The ZRP confirms the arrest of Leon Mukunga (52) for impersonation and extortion, on 18/08/21 at about 0900 hrs. The suspect, together with three other accomplices who are still at large, arrested a motorist driving a Honda Fit for allegedly breaching COVID-19 regulations.

One of the suspects took control of the vehicle and demanded a US$80 bribe from the complainant. They were given US$60 before the complainant called for help and wrestled the suspect as others escaped.

In other news, iHarare had reported that an illegal taxi (mushikashika) driver committed suicide by consuming poison at Zvishavane Central Police Station on Saturday.

It is alleged that the police had refused to return his vehicle which they had impounded for operating in contravention of COVID-19 regulations.

Tapiwa Manyimo, 38, was pronounced dead on arrival at Zvishavane District Hospital where he had been rushed for medical attention.
