President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government has indicated that Covid-19 vaccination may soon become mandatory for all eligible Zimbabweans. This comes at a time when the country is battling a surge in Covid-19 infections and deaths across the country.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony of 1,200 prison officers in Ntabazinduna, near Bulawayo, President Emmerson Mnangagwa said,

“I urge all the officers, graduates to take the injection. No one can refuse.”

“The government will continue to ensure the availability of vaccines. Tomorrow (Sunday) we’re receiving another 500 thousand doses and at the end of the month we will receive another two million, so no one will escape being injected.” as per Zimlive.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa himself received the first shot of the Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine back in March, 2021. He received the second shot on 22 April, 2021.

This is similar to sentiments expressed by the Deputy Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr John Mangwiro. Mangwiro told the Sunday Mail,

“We are going to say if you really want to be selling at your marketplace or to be where you are, you need to be vaccinated. We definitely need to see that you have your (vaccination) certificate.”

“We do not want any Zimbabweans to be a risk to another Zimbabwean, we need to protect each other. Every Zimbabwean has a right to life and we don’t want you to be part of the risk so we encourage everyone to be vaccinated.

“Also, we are not going to target these areas only, we are also going to make sure that prisoners are vaccinated. Those who work in the prison areas are also going to be vaccinated.”

At the moment, however, Covid-19 vaccination remains voluntary across the country. According to the Ministry of Health and Child Care, as of 26 June 2021, 747 330 people have received the first dose while 502 178 people have received the second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.
