Former First Lady Janet Banana Has Died At 83

Former First Lady, Janet Banana has died. The widow of the first president of Zimbabwe, Canaan Sodindo Banana, was 83.

Her cause of death is yet to be announced. However, the former First Lady has not been feeling well for some time and has been hospitalised on a number of occasions in the last few years.

The news of Janet Banana’s death was revealed by outspoken Norton legislator Temba Mliswa.  The firebrand MP said that he was saddened that the former First Lady had died a pauper.  Writing on social media platform Twitter, Mliswa said

In news just received I’m deeply saddened to hear of the passing of the first former First Lady, Mai Janet Banana. I’m angered by the fact she died a pauper, once again another example of Govt not looking after our National Heroes’ wives.

After the immense contribution, her late husband made to the country, regardless of anything, she died a destitute in Luveve. I thought the 2nd Republic would address issues neglected by the 1st Republic and it’s about time we’re able to move motions in Parly to this effect.

Govt must account for the welfare of all National Heroes surviving spouses & families. Last year in November, she lost her son, Micheal and now her. My condolences to the entire Banana family. MHDSRIEP.

Canaan Banana was President of Zimbabwe from independence in 1980 until 1987. He relinquished his post when the post of Prime Minister, which was held by Robert Mugabe, was abolished thus creating an executive President. He died in the United Kingdom in 2003 and was not accorded national hero status.
