A notorious armed robber who went on a crime spree after being granted bail pending appeal at the High Court has been shot by the police.

Musafare Mupanhanga (48) is currently admitted at the Sally Mugabe Central Hospital in Harare after he was shot in the leg following a shootout with the police in Glen View 7, Harare over the weekend.

Musafare is the eldest of the Mupamhanga siblings who have become notorious for carrying out armed robberies and other criminal activities. Musafare’s younger brothers Liberty (29) and Godfrey (27) are currently in remand prison and are facing multiple charges of armed robbery. They are alleged to be part of the gang led by suspected serial armed robber and gang leader Musa Taj Abdul (47).

Their sister, 33-year-old Leona is also facing charges of unlawful entry and armed robbery after she was arrested in 2019 alongside her brothers Musafare and Liberty. The three are alleged to have targeted clothing, electrical gadgets and gas shops that deal in high volumes of cash.

Leona is currently out on bail after the three siblings were granted bail. The matter is still pending before the courts and Leona has been attending the trial.

Musafare on the other hand, went into hiding after he was released on bail and embarked on a new crime spree.

The Herald reports that According to the state’s case, on June 1, Musafare robbed a Tech Centre located at Montagu Shops in Harare’s Avenues area and made off with a safe containing US$3 963 and $16 350 and various cellphones all valued at $1 021 229. For this robbery, he worked with Chamunorwa Takawira, Leo Mandaza, Spicer Takawira and James Nyakutsikwa.

On June 4, Mupamhanga and his gang targeted Prosper Mudoweti in Rusape and stole US$500, cellphones, laptops and other valuables.

ON June 5, Mupamhanga teamed up with Chamunorwa Takawira and Leo Mandaza and robbed a shop at Kuwadzana 6 Complex in Harare. The robbers made off with 1 500 braids and weaves which they loaded into their Toyota Wish vehicle.

The police finally managed to apprehend the robbers following a tip-off which led to the arrest of Mandaza. Mandaza then led the police to Glen View 7, where the law enforcement officers cornered Mupamhanga and Chamunorwa Takawira. Following a brief shootout which resulted in Mupamhanga’s injury, the two were arrested.

Mupamhanga is also alleged to be part of the gang that raided Mashwede Holdings last year and got away with over US$100 000, R42 000, $14 000 worth of fuel coupons, firearms and 20 live rounds of ammunition.

The police have called on the courts to be circumspect about granting bail to serial armed robbers.
