A police officer died after he was shot in the head by a gang of armed robbers in New Luveve, Bulawayo. The deceased police officer was part of a police unit detailed to protect an illegal money changer who suspected that he was being targeted.

35-year-old Constable Gibson Tafara Madzimure was shot dead on Monday night. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Mpilo Central Hospital.

Online publication ZimLive reports that 29-year-old illegal money changer, Last Mukomawashe sought the police’s help after suspecting that he was being targeted by the robbers. The publication reports that an internal police memo detailed that Mukomawashe went to the police at around 2 PM on Monday.

He went to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Homicide where he said that he was being tailed by unknown men. He also said that he had information that he was being targeted by a gang of armed robbers. The gang had allegedly travelled all the way from South Africa.

The police quickly acted on the information and dispatched a team of police officers to the money changer’s home in New Luveve. In addition, a team of detectives from CID Homicide and a Police Special Tactics Team from the ZRP Support Unit at Fairbridge were placed on high alert to monitor the situation.

Later that day, Mukomawashe returned home where Constable Madzimure was already on site. Unfortunately for Constable Madzimure, the armed robbers were preparing to pounce on the illegal money changer. When the robbers noticed the police officer, one of them drew his weapon and shot the police officer before fleeing.

Part of the police memo reads,

“When Constable Madzimure saw Mukomawashe open the gate, he moved forward from his position without observing the three armed robbers who were now just closely behind Mukomawashe. He was shot in the head by one of the suspects who fled from the scene on foot.”

Of late Bulawayo and the southern parts of the country have been hit by a string of armed robberies. Just last month, the police revealed that 32 armed robberies occured in the city in the four months between March 1 and June 30.

Two people were shot during the robberies and one of them died. The police also made 17 arrests.

Over the weekend, the police shot and killed three armed robbers in Bulawayo’s Fourwinds suburb. Three other robbers were captured alive and arrested.
