PSL Apologises To SAFA After Bafana Bafana boss Hugo Broos Stadium Entry Debacle
The South Africa Premier Soccer League (PSL) has apologised to the South African Football Association (SAFA). This comes after Bafana Bafana boss Hugo Broos was not allowed to enter the Orlando Stadium on Saturday for the match between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.
The Belgium-born coach revealed that he was left frustrated after he was denied entry into the stadium to watch the DStv Premiership match which Masandawana won 2-0.
Speaking to SABC Sport, the Bafana Bafana who recently returned to the country said,
“On Friday I was again at the game of Swallows (v Cape Town City) and then again on Saturday (I watched) SuperSport United (v Maritzburg United) and I have to mention, and I am really upset that we would have liked to see the game between Orlando Pirates and Sundowns, but they did not allow us to go into the stadium.
“We could not enter at three o’clock, and we had an accreditation of the league, and they said ‘no, this is not enough, and if I let you in, I will lose my job’.
“I don’t understand it, we are coaches of the national team, and there is a team that doesn’t allow us in the stadium.
“And then the most surprising thing is that the chairman (Irvin Khoza) of that team (Pirates) is the vice president of the South African Football Association; I did not believe it.”
Following the revelation, the PSL apologised for the regrettable incident. The PSL admitted that the League had erred and promised that it would not happen again.
Below is the statement released by the PSL,
The Premier Soccer League today learned of an unfortunate incident in which the South African senior national team head coach was denied access to the DStv Premiership match between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday, 25 September 2021.
The incident is highly regrettable, and the League has apologised unreservedly to the South African Football Association for the unfortunate occurrence.
The PSL immediately investigated the matter and established that the confusion was caused by the League’s failure to inform the host club about the head coach’s attendance as per protocol.
Over the past two months, an arrangement has been in place between the League and SAFA to allow the head coach to attend matches whenever he needs to, while continuing to ensure compliance. The arrangement has functioned well until thus far.
On this occasion, the League regrettably erred and will ensure that this does not occur again.
