State Withdraws Criminal Nuisanse Charges Against Chombo
A Harare magistrate has withdrawn criminal nuisance charges for former Public Works and National Housing Minister Ignatius Chombo after canceling a warrant of arrest issued against the latter yesterday.
Chombo was advised that the State will proceed by way of summons if they need him back to court.
Magistrate Stanford Mambanje issued a warrant of arrest against Chombo and Mathew Mleya after they failed to show up at court yesterday.
Chombo’s lawyer Tungamirai Muganhiri told the court that his client was not in willful default arguing that he was waiting to be advised on the effect of the practice direction.
While canceling the warrant of arrest Magistrate Mambanje said the accused persons came back to court the next day and should be granted a benefit of doubt.
“The court finds no wilful default and therefore the warrant of arrest is thereby cancelled,” he said.
Chombo was jointly charged with ex-Zanu PF youth leaders —Kudzanayi Chipanga, Innocent Hamandishe and Mathew Mleya.
The State represented by Malvern Mapako alleged that between December 8 and 13, 2017, the trio connived to take pictures wearing party regalia emblazoned with President Mnangagwa’s initials, although they knew they were no longer members of Zanu PF.
It is further alleged that the quartet then posted the said photographs on social media.
According to the State, the Zanu PF leadership saw this as a nuisance.
